Mk.5:41,42 – He tenderly clasped the child’s hand in his and said to her in Aramaic, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, wake up from the sleep of death.” Instantly the twelve-year-old girl sat up, stood to her feet, and started walking around the room! Everyone was overcome with astonishment in seeing this miracle!
Jesus came to Jairus’ house after the girl had died, the mourners were already setting the atmosphere of grief. All Jesus could see when He walked in the room was His little girl. He had come at her father’s request, actually Jesus had come at His Father’s request. This family was loved by God and He had plans for His little Sweetheart as well as for Jairus. Maybe you are past hope in a given situation, Lord knows all of us have been there. That’s when Jesus walks in the room and says to you, “Sweetheart, get up. I’m not finished with you yet”. Here is what Barclay says about this passage.
“THERE is a very lovely thing here. In the gospel itself, ‘Maid! Arise’ is ‘Talitha cumi’, which is Aramaic. How did this little bit of Aramaic get itself embedded in the Greek of the gospels? There can be only one reason. Mark got his information from Peter. For the most part, outside of Palestine at least, Peter, too, would have to speak in Greek. But Peter had been there; he was one of the chosen three, the inner circle, who had seen this happen. And he could never forget Jesus’ voice. In his mind and memory he could hear that ‘Talitha cumi’ all his life. The love, the gentleness, the caress of it lingered with him forever, so much so that he was unable to think of it in Greek at all, because his memory could hear it only in the voice of Jesus and in the very words that Jesus spoke.”
Actually what Jesus said was more personal than, “Maid, arise”. It was intimate, more like “Sweetheart, arise”. It’s always personal with Jesus. This is not a formula but a person, this is the man called Jesus who gave His life for us. He loves you and you are His Sweetheart. He has a plan for you, don’t give up no matter how things seem, He is not finished working in and through your life.
