Ps. 19:1 – The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.
Rom.1:20 – For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
My view of creation has radically changed over the years as I have become more and more aware of the glory and presence of God always near and always “speaking” to me. David used the word declare when he spoke about creation. He believed that creation was constantly declaring and actually existed primarily for that purpose, to clearly declare the glory of God. He saw creation as a window into the attributes of God. Paul was very similar. He said that we understand the attributes of God by seeing these attributes in God’s handiwork all around us. Seeing and understanding God is the work of the Holy Spirit. David spoke as a prophet seeing the glory of God in His handiwork. Paul spoke as an apostle apparently understanding the eternal nature and power of God from observing creation. Jonathan Edwards also saw God in His creation, here is something from the Jonathan Edwards Study Bible describing this.
“For Edwards, nature and the creation itself were far more than random or accidental artifice. All things natural were “windows” into spiritual truths, revealing profound realities about God, humanity, grace, and the eternal world. He explained his view in “Miscellanies”, where he wrote, “For indeed the whole outward creation, which is but the shadows of beings, is so made as to represent spiritual things. It might be demonstrated by the wonderful agreement in thousands of things, much of the same kind as is between the types of the Old Testament and their antitypes, and by spiritual things being so often and continually compared with them in the Word of God”. This view is very clear in his notebook “Images of Divine Things”. He likens the sunrise to the resurrection from the dead; lightning to the vengeance of God; trees with their massive and tangled trunks to the church; and even the lowly silkworm to Christ Himself, spinning garments of righteousness to cover others in glory.”
So I have learned greatly from these three men of God; David as a prophet 3000 years ago, Paul as an apostle 2000 years ago, and Jonathan Edwards the pastor and scholar 300 years ago. The Lord is all around us, he is moving and speaking in His beautiful creation. Open your eyes and heart and you just might “see” and “understand” His greatness that is all around you.
