BE STILL AND KNOW

Ps.46:10 – Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

This verse describes our response when we begin to see the greatness of God. I suppose until we become aware of His omnipresence, His omnipotence, and His all knowing (Omniscient) nature we tend to take everything on ourselves. We push and shove and strive exerting all our energy to accomplish something leading us nowhere. Then we hear the voice of the Lord, “Be still and know that I am God”. The word know, yada, is the key to understanding what the Lord is saying here. Yada means to know experientially and relationally. The Lord is saying that we need to stop our own efforts and gaze upon His greatness. To see for ourselves His power and sovereignty at work brings rest to our souls. Being still and reflecting on Him changes our world because it puts us in touch with His omnipotence. “He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above and beyond what we can ask or think.”Here is what Edwards says about this.

“We may observe the ground of this duty, namely, the divinity of God. His being God is a sufficient reason why we should be still before him, in no wise murmuring, or objecting, or opposing, but calmly and humbly submitting to him. How we must fulfill this duty of being still before God, namely, with a sense of his divinity, as seeing the ground of this duty, in that we know him to be God….. Our submission is to be such as becomes rational creatures. God doth not require us to submit contrary to reason, but to submit as seeing the reason and ground of submission. Hence, the bare consideration that God is God may well be sufficient to still all objections and oppositions against the divine sovereign dispensations.”

It’s easy to get caught up in doing rather than acknowledging our great God. It’s not that we are to do nothing it is allowing our recognition of Him and His greatness to be the fountain from which all our work flows. He is able to do more through us in a moment than we can accomplish in ten years. So take a moment, be still and know…Know what? Know that He is God. He is present and always working on our behalf.
