GOOD FOOD

Jn.4:34 – Jesus *said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.

Living in Southeastern Louisiana we know about good food. Some of the greatest restaurants in the world are found right here in New Orleans. Living in an area known for its delicious food it isn’t real hard to figure out that we eat for more than nourishment and survival. We eat because of the pleasure involved in eating. I have had a number of people who have had Covid tell me that the worst part of that sickness was losing their taste. If it doesn’t taste good, eating loses its attraction. I think maybe this is what Jesus was getting at in this passage. His disciples were all excited about the food they had just purchased in Sycar, Jesus was excited about the harvest of souls breaking out in Samaria. This was His food and it was a total joy to the Lord. Here is how Spurgeon describes this event.

“Jesus says nothing about his own will. People think that if they could have their own way they would be perfectly happy, and their dream of happiness consists in this—that their wishes will be gratified, their own longings fulfilled, and their desires granted to them. This is all a mistake. A person will never be happy in this way. Perfect happiness is to be found in exactly the opposite direction, namely, in the casting down of our own will entirely and asking that the will of God may be fulfilled in us. “My meat,” says the sinner, “to do my own will.” Jesus Christ points to another table and says, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me. My greatest comfort and the most substantial nourishment of my spirit are not found in carrying out my own desires but in submitting all my desires to the will of God.” When we have conquered ourselves, we have conquered all.”

That’s the most powerful part of our conversion story, our heart desires change. The things that we totally lived our lives for have become unimportant to us. What matters now is giving away this incredible treasure we have found in Christ. The woman at the well went to town to tell everyone about Jesus. This was Jesus food. The beautiful thing is that it had become the woman at the well’s food too.
