YOU ARE THE SAME

Heb.1:12 – And they will be changed like clothes,
and you will fold them up and put them away.
But you are ‘I AM.’
You never change, years without end!

This is the the completion of Paul’s argument in Hebrews 1 – Christ is greater than the prophets and greater than the angels. The prophets spoke words by the Spirit revealing Christ, Jesus is the very word of the Father. The angels are spiritual beings created as servants of God; Jesus is uncreated and has existed from eternity. He is I am, the only being that never changes. He is truly the same yesterday, today, and forever. Here is how Brian Simmons describes this verse.

“As translated from the Aramaic, which is literally “you are as you are.” This is a variation of the name of God revealed to Moses in Ex. 3:14, “I AM who I AM.” There is an obvious connection here to that incident and endorses the truth that the pre-incarnate Christ was the One who appeared in the burning bush.”

He is greater than Moses, Moses actually worshipped Him in that burning bush. Obviously all of us change. We had a beginning, we get old, our lives fluctuate on a regular basis. The Lord never changes. He is the same from eternity. He was the same when He walked the streets of Israel two thousand years ago. He still heals the sick, frees people from demonic strongholds, restores broken hearts, and He even multiplies the fish and bread. Adam Clarke described the unchangeable nature of the Lord.

“But thou art the same. These words can be said of no being but God; all others are changeable or perishable, because temporal; only that which is eternal can continue essentially, and, speaking after the manner of men, formally the same.”

This means He is the same today and also forever. In today’s passage Jesus is seen sitting at the right hand of God. He is there crowned with glory and honor ruling the universe with His mighty power and authority. That will never change. If you could jump millions of years into the future or travel to the farthest locations of the universe He still reigns. The presidents, kings, and governments will fall but He never changes. We can count on Him, we can build our lives on Him. What He promised He will perform. How do I know? Because He will never change until past the end of time.

  1. My oldest two kids just asked me yesterday ‘who made Jesus’ in which I told them ‘He always was and he always will be.’ This post couldn’t come at a more perfect time. I can’t wait to read it to them! Kings and kingdoms will all pass away but He is the infinite I AM. So good!
