Heb.3:3 – For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house.
Moses was clearly the prophet that the Jewish leaders looked to at the time of Christ. They said that they were followers of Moses but apparently they couldn’t see what Moses was really saying. Everything Moses said and did pointed to Christ. Here is how Jesus explained that to the teachers of he law. Jn.5:45,46 – “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” Moses was part of the house the Lord was building, Christ was the builder Himself. Again, Paul is showing Christ is superior to even Moses. Here is how Murray describes these verses.
“Moses was in every respect a type of Christ. In what he suffered from his very brethren; in his rejection by his brethren; in his zeal and his sacrifice of all for God; in his willingness to die for his people; in his fellowship with God; we see the marks of an apostle, as they were to be perfectly revealed in Christ Jesus. And yet it was all only a shadow and a prophecy, a testimony of things to come. For He hath been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by so much as he that built the house hath more honor than the house. For every house is builded by someone; but He that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were afterwards to be spoken; but Christ, as a Son over His house. Moses was himself but a part of the house: Jesus Christ is the builder.“
This is a very important picture we see being drawn for us in Hebrews. The Jews were stuck on the building or house that God was building. The “house” was a temporary structure to display Christ to the nation of Israel. Today the “house” is the church. If we are not careful we can fall into the trap the Jews fell into. Jesus was greater than Moses and also greater than the house He was building. Paul was bringing our vision back into focus, as he said, “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession: Jesus;” Hebrews 3:1
