CHRIST AND THE RIVER

Rev.22:1 – And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

This River literally flows out from the Father and the Son and proceeds into the earth filling, restoring, and renewing all who are thirsty. This is the result of Christ’s work on the cross ushering whosoever will into His glorious presence. This is why He came, to bring us into this incomprehensible relationship with the Father and the Son. This is our inheritance, enjoying the love of God that fills and satisfies our thirsty souls. Here is what Jonathan Edwards said about this passage,

“The river that supplies them never fails in times of the greatest public calamity and trouble. The Holy Spirit, in his blessed influences and comforts, is compared to a river supplying the New Jerusalem, or the spiritual City of God…This water may well be called living water upon that account, that the spring that supplies it, which is the love of God, is a living spring, a spring that never fails. And therefore the river flows plentifully in the time of the greatest drought, and the trees that are planted by such a river will flourish and look green when other trees are scorched and burnt up with heat. So are those that trust in the Lord: they need not be afraid of a drought and heat. Jer. 17:7–8, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.”

Everywhere this River goes there is healing and there is life. This is John’s final vision in the book of Revelation. Christ is seated on the throne ruling the Universe and pouring His love upon the nations. This is our inheritance, our purpose in life, and our message. This River of Life is available to us all now and when we drink from this River our souls are totally satisfied. This is what our soul longs for, this is what the world longs for. So I have to say it again, “If anyone is thirsty come unto Me (Jesus) and drink. Out of your innermost being shall flow Rivers of Living Water.” And again, “If you drink of the water I have to give you will never thirst”.
