Ps.23:5 – You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
I lived as a Christian without knowing my need for His continual anointing on my life for many years. Somehow I had gravitated to the place that Christianity was somehow like common math, two plus two equals four. I had become fixated on my actions demanding a certain response from the Lord. Somehow I had forgotten about God’s math, you know, the way His involvement changes everything. What am I talking about? Five loaves and two fish equal 5000 people fed. Or maybe this, fishing all night at the right place and right time equaled an empty net. One cast at His word equaled a boat sinking load of fish. What was the difference? It is that unseen element in God’s math, the anointing. Here is how Spurgeon and John Trappe describe this.
“May we live in the daily enjoyment of this blessing, receiving a fresh anointing for every day’s duties. Every Christian is a priest, but he cannot execute the priestly office without unction, and hence we must go day by day to God the Holy Ghost, that we may have our heads anointed with oil. A priest without oil misses the chief qualification for his office, and the Christian priest lacks his chief fitness for service when he is devoid of new grace from on high. “My cup runneth over.” He had not only enough, a cup full, but more than enough, a cup which overflowed…. Whereas a man may be ever so wealthy, but if he be discontented his cup cannot run over; it is cracked and leaks.….Content is more than a kingdom, it is another word for happiness.

“My cup runneth over.” He had not only a fulness of abundance, but of redundance. Those that have this happiness must carry their cup upright, and see that it overflows into their poor brethren’s emptier vessels.”
If you are not sure about this word ‘redundance’ it may be the result of being satisfied with an empty cup for so long. We may not expect our cup to overflow because we have never known that this was even available for us. David also had learned about God’s math, he could defeat a champion warrior because of the anointing, a shepherd could become a king because of the anointing, and he could move from a cave to a palace because of the anointing. Don’t get stuck in the world of two plus two equals four, God’s math changes everything.

To think as our God thinks by way of our relatively minute time before Him daily, (consider a tenth since that would be a starting point in our giving is 2.4 hours daily) I cannot say except for Sunday’s that I come close to that math’s sum. As I indict myself as a one talent holder who buried instead of putting it to work, this must change just as my vision has changed. For me and my 42 years a born again Christian, 42+1 = WOW!
