JUBILEE – THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR

Luke 4:17 – The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor;

One of the great blessings of the Year of Jubilee was the blessing it brought to the poor. Every fifty years all debts were canceled and the family inheritance was restored. Think of the spiritual implications that the fulfillment of Jubilee brings. All of our debt, our mountain of debt called sin, is cancelled. We had no chance of paying our debt in a million lifetimes but the Lord has cancelled it and declares, “your debt has been paid”. Think of the implications of the second blessing of Jubilee, your family inheritance is restored. We are now part of the Lord’s family, Jesus is our brother and His Father is our Father. It is impossible to imagine the immensity of our inheritance in Christ. Not only are we His children with access to Him, everything He owns, all of creation is ours too by inheritance. This is way too big for words. Here is how Albert Barnes describes this message for the poor.

“By the poor are meant all those who are destitute of the comforts of this life, and who therefore may be more readily disposed to seek treasures in heaven; all those who are sensible of their sins, or are poor in spirit; and all the miserable and the afflicted.….. The Pharisees and Sadducees despised the poor; ancient philosophers neglected them; but the gospel seeks to bless them—to give comfort where it is felt to be needed, and where it will be received with gratitude. Riches fill the mind with pride, with self-complacency, and with a feeling that the gospel is not needed. The poor feel their need of some sources of comfort that the world cannot give, and accordingly our Savior met with his greatest success among the poor; and there also, since, the gospel has shed its richest blessings and its purest joys.”

Think about this for a moment, the poor in this world tend to receive the message of the gospel more readily. The end result of this is the transfer of wealth from the wicked to the righteous. There is a shift happening right under our noses, Jubilee has come and the inheritance of the Lord is being given back to the poor. The end of this age is going to be way beyond words.
