JUBILEE IS HERE

JUBILEE IS HERE

Lk.4:17,18 – And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

This is the scripture text that Jesus preached from at the beginning of His ministry when He preached at the synagogue in His home town in Nazareth. He was clearly claiming to be the fulfillment of the coming of the Messiah and His message was clearly an announcement of the prophetic year of Jubilee. In His sermon we see the message of the gospel and the implication of a coming unprecedented season of harvest characterized by signs and wonders. The ministry of Jesus was a taste of what was coming, the first century outpouring was another glimpse of the harvest of the earth. We live in the time where the completion of this prophetic word will shake the entire earth with the gospel, Jubilee is upon us. Here is a quote from Jonathan Edwards in the 1700’s about this season.

“It was a great part of the glory of the ancient prophecies of the Messiah that when he came into the world he should proclaim a universal liberty to all servants, captives, vassals, [and] imprisoned [or] condemned persons.…This was typified to the Jews by the Year of Jubilee, wherein all servants were freed from their masters and an universal liberty was proclaimed throughout the land of Canaan. And indeed, one of the great ends of Christ’s appearing in the world was to proclaim liberty to everyone that would accept of it. He offers a most glorious freedom from the worst of servitudes and bondages. He opens the doors of the most filthy prisons and draws out of the most loathsome dungeons, redeems out of the worst captivity to a most cruel enemy, frees from the hardest drudgery and brings into a perfect and glorious liberty, even the liberty of the sons of God.”

All of us were prisoners of our sins until the message of Jubilee opened our prison doors. Now that we are free we join in with Christ and His followers from every age by saying, “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim liberty to the captives”.

  1. I love that in Jubilee, the freedom release is all encompassing, both the seen and the unseen. We are not playing “Monopoly” with a pretend get out of jail free card. This is God’s proclamation and He up holds what He decrees.
