Isa.7:14 – Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
The birth of Jesus Christ is one of the most mysterious of all of God’s acts. This verse touches on the mystery that is just beyond our ability to grasp. His natural birth (if you call a virgin birth natural) happened without a human father. But that isn’t the end of this mystery. Jesus didn’t have His beginning in Bethlehem, He has lived m eternity which brings us to His other birth which is quite different from any birth we know. He is the only begotten of the Father, yet He has no beginning. He is generated or radiated from the Father from eternity; in other words He is not created. Did you understand that? If so, tell me because I can’t understand it, He is the Son of God but He has always been the Son of God. Then what about Bethlehem? The eternal Son took on a human body, He literally became a man. Here is how Augustine describes this miracle.
“What can I say? Christ was born of a human mother and hence has commended that holy day to the ages. He was born of a Divine Father and hence has created all the ages. That nativity never had a mother, nor can this nativity we’re celebrating today ever seek the help of a father.
What else can I say? Christ was born of a father and a mother, but without a father or a mother. That’s to say, as God He was born of a Father; as man, of a mother. Without a mother He’s still a Divine Being; without a father He’s still a human being. How? It’s something of a conundrum. As Isaiah put it, how can one describe His generation? Who’ll make any sense out of it? (53:8)”
No wonder Isaiah said that His name is wonderful. Everything about Him is supernatural, especially His birth. So if you can get past the parties, family gatherings, and present buying and wrapping be still for a moment and consider the mystery. The eternal Son of God without a human mother became the Son of Man without a human Father. This is why Christmas is so special, the Son of God became a Son of Man that we could be sons and daughters of God.

How is it that you and I have been awakened to ponder about these things, to have an experience in His presence whenever we want? How do we explain that or even the “filling” which can overwhelm some or all of our deep emotions. Perhaps words as we understand them fall short in attempting to convey the depth and richness possible in His presence. No worries, as always, we do our part, He does all the rest.
