Ps.45:2 – You are the most handsome of the sons of mankind;
Grace is poured upon Your lips;
Therefore God has blessed You forever.
This passage could only be penned by someone awestruck by the beauty of the Lord. This vocabulary may be strange to most but these are the words of a lover, one overcome by the grandeur of the presence of the Lord. The Hebrew text literally says, “Beautiful, beautiful”, The Psalmist was apparently lost for words in the beauty of His presence. Here is how Spurgeon describes these words.
“In person, but especially in mind and character, the King of saints is peerless in beauty. The Hebrew word is doubled, “Beautiful, beautiful art thou.” Jesus is so emphatically lovely that words must be doubled, strained, yea, exhausted before he can be described. Among the children of men many have through grace been lovely in character, yet they have each had a flaw; but in Jesus we behold every feature of a perfect character in harmonious proportion. He is lovely everywhere, and from every point of view, but never more so than when we view him in conjugal union with his church; then love gives a ravishing flush of glory to his loveliness.”
In John’s gospel he said that grace and truth were revealed in Jesus Christ. Everything about Him radiates with the grace and very reality of the Father. Christ’s words and actions throughout His three short years of ministry communicated the amazing grace of our God. His current role as our Heavenly Intercessor continues to display the beauty of the Lord. Spurgeon continues his thoughts on this amazing verse.
“Grace is poured into thy lips. Beauty and eloquence make a man majestic when they are united; they both dwell in perfection in the all fair, all eloquent Lord Jesus. Grace of person and grace of speech reach their highest point in him. Grace has in the most copious manner been poured upon Christ, for it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell, and now grace is in superabundance, poured forth from his lips to cheer and enrich his people.”
Our hearts are all longing for this beauty. We catch glimpses of it in creation and when searching for Him in the scripture. When we come in contact with the Lord Himself in the person of the Holy Spirit we too find ourselves in that place where we are at a loss for words. What is our response? All we can do is join in with those smitten by the love and beauty of our Lord. What is our response? “BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL”.

Yes. “Beautiful. Beautiful.” 🙌
