HE COMMANDS ANGELS

Heb.1:13,14 – But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

It’s funny to me how often angels are mentioned in the Bible but how they are not on the radar of most of us Christians at all. Apparently they are always present with us, maybe even quite a number of angels are assigned to each of us constantly. What would be quite overwhelming is what a church service would look like if the angels gather with us in worship, there could be thousands of angels present at every service. In this passage in Hebrews it describes Jesus in His human state being given authority over the angels. Apparently they were created to worship the Lord and to help us. I wonder how many times you have been helped by angels or how many times you unexpectedly entertained angels? Here are some comments from Jonathan Edwards on this passage from Hebrews.

“Christ, as God’s Son, is the heir of his kingdom; and the saints are joint heirs with Christ; which implies that they are heirs of the same inheritance, to possess the same kingdom, in and with him, according to their capacity. Christ in his kingdom reigns over heaven and earth; he is appointed the heir of all things…The angels are given to Christ, as a part of his dominion; they are all given to wait upon him, as ministering spirits to him: so also they are all, even the highest and most dignified of them, “ministering spirits, to minister to them who are the heirs of salvation” [Heb. 1:14]. They are Christ’s angels, and they are also their angels. Such is the saints’ union with Christ, and their interest in him, that what he possesses, they possess, in a much more perfect and blessed manner, than if all things were given to them separately and by themselves, to be disposed of according to their discretion.”

So according to scripture angelic help and protection is part of our inheritance. We are sons of God and angelic help is part of our story. I am not sure how this affects you but for me it is pretty humbling. Why would He send supernatural beings to help me along? Two answers come to mind; first of all He loves me. Secondly, my life as one of His sons is about advancing His kingdom. Angels are all about kingdom business, hopefully you are too.

  1. Not a subject I’ve spent time looking into. Wow, there is a lot of help available and most of us have barely tapped into the Commander of all sources. Just sorting through the Trinity and who to address and when takes a commitment of time I haven’t always possessed. To seek first the kingdom and His righteousness is not a couple of hours a week side job. I agree this is all pretty humbling, all the attention God gives us, kingdom business involves me.
