THE TRINITY AND THE ANOINTING OF JESUS

Heb.1:8,9 – But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.

Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Most every Christian or Christian teacher knows about Jesus being anointed with the Holy Spirit when He was baptized in water by John the Baptist. After this encounter with the Holy Spirit Jesus began to move in the power of signs, wonders, and miracles. What is not spoken of very often is the anointing Jesus received when He returned to heaven after His death and resurrection. Hebrews 1:9 describes this important event. This is the anointing that came upon the man Christ Jesus to empower Him for His heavenly tasks.

If you take a close look at this event something quite astonishing becomes apparent. We see the converging of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in this important eternal moment. The Father anoints the Son, the Son is anointed with the Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the substance or person that Jesus is baptized with or into. The three are moving together as One in order to advance their kingdom plan. Here is a great quote from the reformer Lucas Osiander about this moment.

“Even the mystery of the Trinity must be noted in this verse. God the Father anoints the Son: God the Son is anointed by the Father. And he is anointed with the oil of gladness, that is, God the Holy Spirit, conferring his own gifts abundantly and without measure on the Son of Man: who by another reason is the eternal God. But in the first place it must be observed that the apostle to the Hebrews here adduces the prophecy concerning Christ so that he might commend the divinity of Christ, and might remove him (according to his divine nature) from the number of creatures.”

This is one of the clearest glimpses we get in the scriptures of the Trinity and how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit function together in absolute harmony. So what is the point of all of this? Actually you are. His whole purpose was to restore fallen man to their place of fellowship with Him. The outpouring of the Spirit on the man, Jesus of Nazareth is significant because He was the first man to taste this level of God’s glory and goodness. So now He is after you and me. He wants to make us whole to magnify His plan of redemption. He wants each of us to be anointed with the oil of gladness.

  1. When He ascended to heaven and sat down on the right hand of the throne, He received from the Father anew and in fullest mea-sure, as the Son of Man, the gift of the Holy Spirit to bestow on His people (Acts 2:33). That Spirit was to Him the oil of joy, the joy that had been set before him, the joy of His crowning day when He saw of the travail of His soul! With an anointing above His fellows—for there was none like Him-God gave Him the Spirit without measure. And yet, for His fellows-His redeemedHe made them members of His body with Him as Head. They became partakers of His anointing and His joy. He said, “The Lord has anointed Me to give the oil of joy.” Christ, our King and our God, is anointed with the oil of joy. He is anointed, too, to give the oil of joy: His kingdom is one of everlasting gladness, of joy unspeakable—Andrew Murray
