UNMIXED HEART

Matthew 5:8 – ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.’

After this famous teaching we call the Beatitudes Jesus called His followers the salt of the earth. The Beatitudes described those whom He labeled as salt. One of the characteristics Jesus spoke about was purity of heart. The pure in heart will see God; what is it about purity that allows that to happen? To me it seems that this implies a removal of impurities that corrupted your heart and vision that allowed you to see God in His goodness for yourself. It goes without saying that this happens because the effect the gospel of His grace has on our hearts. We have been purified and are no longer interested in the impurities of this life. Here is how Barclay describes this purity.

“HERE is the beatitude which demands that all who read it should stop and think, and examine themselves.
The Greek word for pure is katharos, and it has a variety of usages, all of which have something to add to the meaning of this beatitude for the Christian life.
(1) Originally it simply meant clean, and could, for instance, be used of soiled clothes which have been washed clean.
(2) It is regularly used for corn which has been winnowed or sifted and cleansed of all chaff. In the same way, it is used of an army which has been purged of all discontented, cowardly, unwilling and inefficient soldiers, and which is a force composed solely of first-class fighting men.
(3) It very commonly appears in company with another Greek adjective – akēratos. Akēratos can be used of milk or wine which is unadulterated with water, or of metal which has in it no tinge of alloy.
So, the basic meaning of katharos is unmixed, unadulterated, unalloyed. That is why this beatitude is so demanding a beatitude. It could be translated:
Blessed are those whose motives are always entirely unmixed, for they shall see God.”

I really like this last part of this quote, purity describes something that has not been polluted by the impurities of this world. Sounds simple but only the Lord can put a seal on us to protect us from the corruption in this world. So those who are called the salt of the earth walk in purity, this is how we know we have been changed by God.

  1. Love this teaching❤️.
I long and strive to be the salt of the earth. I pray my life affects the life of others and gives glory to my Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Spirit.
