THE BEAUTIFUL WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Job 26:13 – By His Spirit (breath) He adorned (garnished) the heavens…

Eph.2:10 – For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

I love the person and the work of the Holy Spirit. In today’s verse from the book of Job we see that all of creation is the beautiful work of the Spirit (breath) of God. As you may know the Old Testament word for Spirit is ruach which also means breath. Everything that is in every corner of the universe is the beautiful work of the Spirit of God. Just as breath is so intimate and close, the breath of God formed everything and beautifies every part of His creation. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this work of the Spirit of God.

“He quickens and beautifies all things. So we read that “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” [Gen. 1:2], or of the chaos, to bring it out of its confusion, into harmony and beauty. So we read, Job 26:13, that God “by his spirit garnished the heavens.” Now whose office can it be so properly to actuate and enliven all things, as his who is the eternal and essential act and energy of God? And whose office can it be so properly to give all things their sweetness and beauty, as he who is himself the beauty and joy of the Creator?”

The Lord formed all of the physical parts of the universe, including you and me. Now this is where this truth becomes beyond wonderful, He also recreates and beautifies fallen human beings. This is God’s greatest work, greater than forming galaxies and all the scientific mysteries they contain. This work is greater than the intricacies of His creation resulting in this beautiful place for us to live and prosper in. Redemption and the beautification of a born again soul is God’s masterpiece. Paul said in Ephesians 2:10 that His work of redemption in us is His workmanship. This word is poema, we are God’s poetry or artistry as he displays His glory to us, in us, and through us. This is why the church is so beautiful, not that it has perfect humans there but fallen beings who are being transformed before our eyes. You are God’s poetry or work of art, its time to put His work on display.
