HUMILITY FALLS AT HIS FEET

Lk.8:41,42 – And a man named Jairus came, and he was an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began urging Him to come to his house; for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying.

It’s really amazing how difficult it is to bring us to a place where we are willing to fall at His feet. Our mind says, “they really needed that”, implying that the weak need that demonstrative faith but I am beyond that. It’s very likely Jairus would have had nothing to do with Jesus before his daughter became sick, he was prominent in his world, leader of the synagogue. He had probably already been informed by his leaders in Jerusalem that Jesus was no longer welcome at his meetings. He would willingly complied until…..until the day his daughter fell sick. Jairus had also heard the stories of the miracles surrounding Jesus, it didn’t take long for him to come to some conclusions. His daughter was more important than his prestige, to Jesus’ feet he went. Here is how Barclay describes this story.

“Jairus was the president of the synagogue. That is to say, he was the man who was responsible for the administration of the synagogue and the ordering of public worship. He had reached the highest post that life could give him in the respect of his community. No doubt he was well to do; no doubt he had climbed the ladder of earthly ambition and prestige. It seemed as if life – as it sometimes does – had given lavishly of many things but was about to take the most precious thing away. All the pathos of life is in the background of this story…..He was clearly a man who could swallow his pride. He was the president of the synagogue. By this time the synagogue doors were rapidly closing on Jesus, if indeed they had not already closed. He could have had no love for Jesus and he must have regarded Jesus as a breaker of the law. But in his hour of need, he swallowed his pride and asked for help.”

Jairus got his miracle that day, even though the little girl died before Jesus arrived at the house, she was brought back to life by the Lord’s touch. Jairus had been brought to the brink, his daughter was on the verge of death. His decision possibly cost him his job and his position of influence but it was worth it for Jairus, he found his place at the feet of Jesus, this is where he would stay for the rest of his life.
