ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD

Lk. 1:34-38 – And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

What stood out with Mary’s response to the Lord? In similar situations, Abraham’s wife Sarah had laughed at the promise of God as being ridiculous, Zechariah doubted the words of Gabriel and he was struck dumb, Mary believed God’s promise. She believed God could do anything and she was willing to do whatever the Lord asked of her. If you look carefully at what the angel said it was like this Lk.1:37 – Amp – “For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment”. The angel had delivered the word of the Lord, Mary believed whatever God says will be done. Here is how the Fire Bible describes this verse.

“Mary submitted herself completely to God’s will (i.e., what he desires and plans based on his character and purposes) and trusted his message. She willingly accepted the honor and the criticism that being Jesus’ mother would bring. Part of the criticism and rejection would likely come right away as her body showed signs of being pregnant before marriage through a miracle of the Holy Spirit. Young women in the church should follow Mary’s example in sexual purity, love for God, faith in his Word and a willingness to obey the Holy Spirit, no matter what he asks.”

So what kind of promise is the Lord speaking over your life? Is He speaking a promise of your family coming to Christ? Or maybe He is saying this is the time I will break the yoke of poverty from you and your house. Or maybe its a ministry promise, that you will be used to reach many with the gospel. So in a sense we are all in the same place as Mary. There are so many things we want to see that haven’t come to pass yet. So what is our response? I say be it done to me according to your word.
