Rev.3:20 – Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
This word from the Lord was originally spoken to the church in Laodecia. Jesus had brought a stern rebuke saying that this church had become lukewarm. Jesus went on to say that He would prefer hot or cold, He despised lukewarm more than even a cold heart. Have you ever wondered why lukewarm was such a problem? The problem is this, they had tasted the greatness and beauty of the Lord and they were simply not impressed. To be unimpressed with greatness, especially the infinite greatness of the Lord, is quite an insult. It would be better to be totally clueless than to be apathetic toward this amazing God. The answer was simply to invite Christ into your life. When you know Christ in reality there is no room for apathy. Here is how John Owen describes the solution to lukewarm hearts.
“Behold, he stands at the door of your souls and knocks. O reject him not, lest you seek him and find him not! Pray study him a little; you love him not because you know him not. Why does one of you spend his time in idleness and folly and wasting of precious time—perhaps debauchedly? Why does another associate and assemble with them that scoff at religion and the things of God? Merely because you know not our dear Lord Jesus. Oh, when he shall reveal himself to you and tell you he is Jesus whom you have slighted and refused, how will it break your hearts and make you mourn like a dove, that you have neglected him! And if you never come to know him, it had been better you had never been. While it is called Today, then, harden not your hearts.”
I remember hearing Billy Graham say one time that many modern Christians have gotten just enough of God to inoculate them from the real thing. The amazing thing about this verse to me is that the Lord is still reaching out to supposed Christians when their hearts were far from Him. How is it with your soul today?
If you honestly think that maybe you have become apathetic to the things of God and could even be considered lukewarm maybe its time to call out to the Lord for a true restoration of your first love for Jesus. Listen, I think I hear a knock at the door.
