John 1:2 – He was in the beginning with God.
John 1:2 – TPT – They were together—face-to-face, in the very beginning.
This is what Jesus had on His mind that last night before His crucifixion while He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, that He had been with the Father from eternity. In that prayer He reflected on the eternal relationship He had enjoyed with the Father and began to unveil the very purpose He had come, that all who believed on Him could enjoy the same intimacy with the Father that Jesus had always enjoyed. He had been in the center of His Father’s love for eternity, He actually said that He was in the bosom of the Father. It really doesn’t get much more intimate than that.
So in these opening statements in the gospel of John, John got to the very heart of His message. He wanted to display the Father’s love for the Son and as part of that show the incredible life that we have been called to enjoy, to experience the matchless love of God that saves us, heals us, satisfies us, and brings us into our eternal purpose; to glorify God by enjoying His goodness forever. Here are a couple of observations from my commentary on the gospel of John.
“John 1:2 – ‘He was in the beginning with God.’ This short statement, though easily overlooked, is filled with supernatural implications. Jesus has not only always been, He has been with the Father, knowing and loving the Father intimately from eternity. This is the point of John’s gospel, Christ lives and enjoys life with the Father and He became one of us that we may share that same intimate relationship. His life, miracles, and love draw us to the Father. John unveils this love in his gospel, from turning water into wine, to healing the blind man, causing the lame to leap for joy, and raising Lazarus from the dead. All of that draws us into the Father’s love.”
This was the whole point of the humanity of Christ; He displayed God’s love for us in His birth, His life, His teaching, His miracles, and His death and resurrection. If you have tasted His love for yourself then you know, there is nothing that can compare with the Father’s love for us. In this opening passage in John’s gospel the Lord is calling us into a different kind of life. He is offering us the fellowship with God that he had tasted for himself, he is calling us to simply be with God in this life of the Father’s love.
