THEY WORSHIPPED HIM

Matt.2:10,11 – When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And after they came into the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary; and they fell down and worshiped Him.

This marks the beginning of a major shift in the history of the world. Gentiles had traveled hundreds of miles, obviously being led by the Spirit of God, and made their way to the City of David to worship the Jewish Messiah. There is so much here in this short passage. We see the fulfillment of God’s promise to David, that one of his sons would real forever on the throne of David. We also see gentiles bowing down and pledging allegiance to this Jewish Messiah. Finally, and most shocking of all, we see these wise men worshipping this Child. This could only be recorded in scriptures if it was absolutely claiming that Jesus was God Himself. No one else can receive worship, Jesus was our Immanuel, God with us. Here is how Spurgeon describes this scene.

“We worship Jesus. Our faith sees him go from the manger to the cross, and from the cross right up to the throne, and there where Jehovah dwells, amidst the insufferable glory of the divine presence stands the man, the very man who slept at Bethlehem in the manger; there he reigns as Lord of lords. Our souls worship him again. Thou art our Prophet, every word thou sayest, Jesu, we believe and desire to follow: thou art our Priest, thy sacrifice hath made us clean, we are washed in thy blood; thou art our King, command, we will obey, lead on, and we will follow: We worship thee. We should spend much time in worshipping the Christ, and he should ever have the highest place in our reverence.”

I love what Spurgeon said here about our Lord; He is our prophet that proclaims God’s word over us. He is our Priest who gave His life as a sacrifice for our sin. He is also the King of the universe, He is ruling all things as the Sovereign Lord. These wise men became the first fruits of God’s plan for the last days. He had said that the whole earth would be filled with the glory of the Lord. In our day the nations are hearing the gospel some for the first time. Like the wise men of old many are finding themselves bowing down and worshipping the Messiah, the Son of David, and the very Son of God.
