Matt.2:10 – And after they came into the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary…
This is where everything begins, when we see Jesus for ourselves. We may not be able to physically go to Bethlehem like the wise men but we can still see Jesus when we turn our hearts toward Him. The wise men may have seen Joseph or even Mary but their eyes were turned toward Jesus, He was why they came from far away, they had come to see Jesus. As you go through the scriptures you can see it is in looking upon Jesus that our lives change. That’s how it was for Paul on the road to Damascus, for Bartimaeus in Jericho, for John on the Isle of Patmos, and even for the Fisherman Simon Peter fishing on the Sea of Galilee. Spurgeon described how the wise man took a look at Christ, maybe we will see Him ourselves as we read these words.
“They looked, and looked, and looked again. They glanced at his mother, but they fixed their eyes on him. “They saw the young Child.” So, too, this morning let us think of Jesus with fixed and continuous thought. He is God, he is man, he is the substitute for sinners; he is willing to receive all who trust him. He will save, and save this morning, every one of us who will rely upon him. Think of him. If you are at home this afternoon, spend the time in thinking upon him. Bring him before your mind’s eye, consider and admire him. Is it not a wonder that God should enter into union with man and come to this world as an infant? He who made heaven and earth hangs on a woman’s breast for us! For our redemption the Word was made flesh. This truth will breed the brightest hope within your soul. If you follow that babe’s wondrous life till it ends at the cross, I trust you may there be able to give such a look at him that, like as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, and they that looked were healed, so “you looking may be healed of all your spiritual diseases.”
Helping us to see Jesus is the work of the Holy Spirit. He is the One who carries us to the manger as we behold the Word who became flesh. He carries us on to the ministry of Jesus where we hear His teaching like no other man. We are stunned as we see Him healing the multitudes from their diseases and casting out demons with His words. Then we see Him on the cross where He carried away our sins. Next we are standing at the empty tomb where we realize He has risen from the dead. Finally we see Him in His glory, seated at the Father’s right hand. No wonder the wise men fixed their eyes on Jesus, there is no one like Him in the heavens or in all the earth.
