Heb.11:24-26 – By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
Moses entire life became a walk of faith. His mother stepped out in faith when leaving him in a basket by the Nile River to avoid the executioners. After being discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter (what are the odds?) he was raised as her son in Pharaoh’s house. Moses left his life of leisure in Pharaoh’s world to live among the Israeli slaves in Egypt. Moses greatest walk of faith began after he met the Lord himself in the burning bush. What happened in that visitation? Moses discovered the riches of Christ which far exceeded the riches of Egypt. Think for a moment about the magnitude of Moses’ decision, he could live as a prince in the palace of the Pharaoh or he could return and lead a nation of slaves into a greater inheritance. As far as Moses was concerned there was no choice to be made, Christ’s treasure with suffering was better than anything this world could offer. Here is how the Christ Centered Expository Commentary describes this passage.
“In verse 24 the spotlight shifts from the faith of Moses’s parents to Moses’s own faith. If Moses had not rejected sonship to Pharaoh’s daughter, he would have been choosing the fleeting pleasure of sin. The choice before him was ultimately this: comfort and privilege in the house of Egypt or persecution and suffering with the people of Israel. [Heb, p. 189] Making the former choice is faithlessness; the latter is faithfulness. Moses chose the latter. Rather than laying claim to stature, he aligned himself with Israel because he trusted the Lord and knew Egypt was not his home. Moses recognized the vanity of Pharaoh’s house and the all-surpassing worth of obedience to God.”
The reason the choice Moses made seems strange to some is because they have not yet seen the treasures of Christ. Their whole life has been cluttered with the love for the things of this world never even noticing the treasures of the kingdom. By faith we see for ourselves the treasures of the Lord, after that the decision becomes quite easy. We choose Him along with the rejection of this world, by faith we possess the riches of heaven.
