Heb.11:7 – By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
It is sometimes really hard to push back against public opinion. We are so accustomed to majority rules that we translate that into the majority is right. WRONG !!! Jesus lived His whole life pushing back against the majority. What do I mean? His brothers thought He was a little loopy until He was raised from the dead. The folks from the hometown in Nazareth tried to kill Jesus after His first sermon went sideways. Then there was the spiritual leaders, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, they despised Jesus and His ministry and wanted Him dead. Then of course there were the Romans that finally took His life. But God raised Him from the dead. He pushed against the public opinion because He had heard from the Father and He was walking by faith. What does all of that have to do with Noah? Well…..like Jesus Noah had to kick back against public opinion and walk by faith. Here is how the Believer’s Bible Commentary describes this.
“The faith of Noah was based on God’s warning that He was going to destroy the world with a flood. There had never been a flood in human experience, in fact, there is some reason to believe that there had never been rainfall up to that time. Noah believed God and built an ark, even though he was probably very far from navigable waters. Doubtless he was the butt of many a joke. But Noah’s faith was rewarded: his household was saved, the world was condemned by his life and testimony, and he became heir of the righteousness which is received on the basis of faith. Perhaps many of the early Jewish Christians to whom this Letter was written often wondered why, if they were right, they were such a small minority. Noah steps out from the pages of the OT to remind them that in his day only eight people were right and all the rest of the world perished!”
So what about us today? Our belief in the authority and inspiration of God’s word is not popular. Many want to pick and choose what parts to agree with. Believing in the supernatural; speaking in tongues, healing the sick, and worshipping until God comes down is not popular. At the end of the day we have decisions to make, am I going to walk with the majority or am I going to walk with God.
