My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

This Psalm gives us a glimpse into the very heart of prophesy. The author of this Psalm is describing the very source of prophesy. He says that his heart is overflowing with this powerful theme. Of course he is describing the overflow of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Quite often, as in this case, the overflow of the Spirit takes the form of prophesy. This writer is describing his heart as bursting with the prophetic message of the coming Savior. If you want to be used in the gift of prophesy, get so full of God that your heart can’t contain it, many times this is how the gift of prophesy starts. The Message Bible describes it like this.

“My heart bursts its banks, spilling beauty and goodness. I pour it out in a poem to the king, shaping the river into words:” (Psalm 45:1 MSG)

What a beautiful description of spiritual revelation, my heart is bursting it’s banks, such a powerful revelation that the writer could not hold it in. The beauty and goodness of God are so stunning that the psalmist could not contain it, he wanted to tell everyone about the greatness of His God. Charles Spurgeon describes this experience in his thoughts about this verse.
“There is no writing like that dictated by the heart. Heartless hymns are insults to heaven. A good heart will only be content with good thoughts. Where the fountain is good, good streams will flow forth. The learned tell us that the word may be read overflows, or as others, boils or bubbles up, denoting the warmth of the writer’s love, the fulness of his heart, and the consequent richness and glow of his utterance, as though it were the ebullition (to boil) of his inmost soul, when most full of affection. We have here no single cold expression; the writer is not one who frigidly studies the elegancies and proprieties of poetry, his stanzas are the natural outburst of his soul…”
This psalm is a description of true prophetic revelation. True spirituality is not just crossing the “t’s” and dotting the “i’s”, it is a heart full of the love of God. God’s love is being poured out today in a unprecedented ways. If you feel dry and empty, it’s time to call on the Lord. When you do, don’t be surprised when your heart begins to burst it’s banks overflowing in the gift of prophesy.
