Song 4:16 ¶ Awake, O north wind,
and come, O south wind!
Blow upon my garden,
let its spices flow.
Let my beloved come to his garden,
and eat its choicest fruits.

There is nothing like spring in New Orleans. I went outside early this morning and there had just been an early morning shower. My whole back yard was literally filled with the smell of gardenias, the fragrance was not only beautiful it was demanding. It demanded me to stop and take notice. As I paused from my morning activities, I was struck by the spiritual parallels, the morning shower had left a clean, fresh feeling in the air. That smell always reminds me of the refreshing rains of the Holy Spirit that He sends upon us. Psa. 72:6 “He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, like showers that water the earth.” It was as if the rain caused the flowers to release their fragrance. If we are like the trees in His garden, then the flowers are the fruit. There is an amazing aroma of Christ that flows from us when we experience these showers of the Spirit upon our lives. Charles Spurgeon spoke about the fragrance of Christ, listen to his words.

“In Jesus I find not only fragrance, but a bed of spices; not one flower, but all manner of sweet flowers. He is to me my rose and my lily, my heart’s-ease and my cluster of camphire. When he is with me it is May all the year round, and my soul goes forth to wash her happy face in the morning-dew of his grace, and to solace herself with the singing of the birds of his promises. Precious Lord Jesus, let me in very deed know the blessedness which dwells in abiding, unbroken fellowship with thee.”

All of us need to experience these regular outpourings of His Spirit, this is where we receive refreshing and renewal of life. As we learn to linger in these special outpourings of His Spirit, we are refreshed and begin to emit the fragrance of Christ in our world. Paul said this fragrance is perceived in different ways depending on the spiritual condition of the one who is confronted with the aroma of Christ. To some, it is the smell of death. The supernatural nature of Christ’s presence is disturbing and reminds the lost that they have chosen the wrong life. They will do all they can to deny that the fragrance exists. When that doesn’t work (sometimes the aroma can’t be ignored), they will become angry and speak ugly words about those who have chosen the spiritual life.
To the spiritual, the fragrance of Christ is the sweetest smell on earth. It is the fragrance of life itself and serves to remind us of the incredible life that awaits us. So tomorrow morning go outside and breath in deeply. Stop and enjoy the beautiful city we live in. Maybe, just maybe you will catch a whiff of the smell of the other world, if you do, bow and worship. The Lord is passing your way.

  1. we have all this and more if we walk in his light and our hearts are with him, those that walk in darkness dispise those that walk in the light because their deeds are evil, those in the light allow the lord to be their Lord and sheperd, we get blessed coming in to his presence, and much joy real joy only can come from him.

  2. Amen and Amen, thank you Lord, for your beautiful, wonderful fragrance. There’s no words for your Love, except You. Let your rain pour on me. What an amazing New world. Praise you and only you. Have A wonderful day.

  3. Amen! Wow!! I had an experience today around 10 am and went and had a run and in the back of our neighborhood I passed by and a strong flower smell, I am not good with the names . But it was white and it smelled so beautiful!! Thank you so much!! God bless:)
