Is. 60:19 “The sun shall no longer be your light by day,
Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you;
But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light,
And your God your glory.
Creation is an amazing demonstration of the greatness and creativity of our God. Paul said that God’s “invisible attributes are clearly seen” in His creation. Paul went on to say “even His eternal power and Godhead” are seen through His glorious creation. One of the greatest pictures of The Lord is seen in the sun. Actually, when Jesus is seen, His face appears like the radiance of the noonday sun. Here are some of the comparisons I recently thought of as I remembered Jesus as the promised Sun of Righteousness.
1. PERFECTLY CONSISTENT – Just as the sun is perfect, always present, always shining, always appearing like a fine clock in its consistency; so is our Lord. He is always present, His glory is always shining, and He is absolutely perfect in His timing.
2. PENETRATING- The rays of the sun have a quality I like to call penetrating. If you lay down in the sun, the beams seem to penetrate your skin and go into your being. The rays of the Glory of The Lord are also quite penetrating. He not only pierces the skin but actually penetrates our very soul and spirit.
3. ENLIGHTENING- We can see our whole world differently when the sun comes up. Before sunrise, the world is filled with shadows and a strange foreboding. Once the sun rises our world changes, we see everything, even ourselves, through the light of the sun. In the same way, when the light of the Glory of The Lord shines on us suddenly everything is different. First, we see the beauty and attractiveness of The Lord in this glorious light. We may have been disinterested or even ambivalent before, but now, He is incomparable. Like King Solomon said, “He is altogether lovely”, our view of spiritual things changes. We see our Bibles differently, it now appears as a great gospel feast rather than a scary book of regulations, We see the church differently, instead of a boring place filled with hypocrites, we now see a gathering of the redeemed. They may be imperfect, but there is a common bond called redemption that makes us one. We see our family differently, our job is new, and even our purpose begins to become clear. In His light we see everything bathed in Him, our world has become new.
4. AWAKENING – The natural sun awakens us to a brand new day. There is something about the sunrise that carries within it a sense of expectancy. In the same way, the light shining out from The Lord is saturated with expectancy. He makes all things new. As His light awakens our souls, we know we are at the beginning of God’s new day.
These are some of the amazing comparisons of our Lord to the sun. We will examine more tomorrow.
