Song 2:8 The voice of my beloved!
Behold, he comes
Leaping upon the mountains,
Skipping upon the hills.

I have always loved music. It is a great way to release our emotions and also to pick us up when we are down. When I became a Christian, I became immediately attracted to christian music. I lived in California shortly after my conversion in 1973 and was privileged to enjoy the music that was connected to the Jesus movement. I listened to Chuck Girard, Love Song, Daniel Amos, Barry McGuire, Second Chapter of Acts, and many other Jesus bands. When we started our church in New Orleans in 1979 music was a huge part of what we did, it still is today. Since the mid nineties one of my favorite bands was Delirious. Most of their music was written by Martin Smith. Much of his music is about intimacy with God. I love his music because it always deals with the matters of the heart. Hear is one of Martin’s songs which we recently did in our church.

Song of Solomon

Over The Mountains
Over the Sea
Here You come running my Lover to me

When I feel the cold of winter
And this cloak of sadness, I need You
All the evil things that shake me
All the words that break me, I need You

Over The Mountains
Over the Sea
Here You come running my Lover to me

Do not hide me from Your presence
Pull me from Your shadows, I need You
Beauty wrap Your arms around me
Sing Your song of kindness I need You

Over The Mountains
Over the Sea
Here You come running my Lover to me

All through the valleys
Through the dark of night
Here You come running to hold me till it’s light

I’ll come running
Come running
Come running, back to You

Some Christians are uncomfortable with lyrics that have such a personal nature. I remember back in 1994 when David Ruis wrote a song called True Love. The line in that song that said “Let me know the kisses of Your mouth…” caused quite a stir. “How could you compare the love of God with a kiss on the lips?” I guess it causes an eruption because far too many Christians have a creed rather than a love relationship with our Lord. But at the end of the day, Christianity is intended to be a religion of the heart. Because of this, music has always been the vehicle to express our love and devotion to The Lord.
Once you have tasted for yourself the incredible love of God your questions about intimacy and worship are answered. From that point on formal, stiff songs just sound hollow. What is the point of having songs in church if we do not express the deepest feelings of our heart. If we sing about strong feelings of love for our earthly lovers, how much more should we express our affections for our Heavenly Lover.

Over The Mountains
Over the Sea
Here You come running my Lover to me

Yes wrap your beauty around your children! 🙂

  2. We are the bride! He is just prepping us on earth for what will be an indescribable eternal intimacy of pure worship in heaven. Oh, how I long to be with my beloved with no distractions!

  3. Good Morning, Pastor Frank, Intimacy with God is all I need, I love the kisses of His mouth. I fell in love with Christian music really fast also. There is just something about Christian music. Ha, Way better than man made world music lyrics about the world. Christian music is More meaningful, more love, more enjoyment, fills you up until overflowing, the atmosphere around us is awesome as I worship daily, my dogs play more, the bird goes nuts when Jesus Culture is playing out the speaker’s inside the house and outside in the yard. Nothing but the LORDS love in this body. I will sing, I will shout, His music plays in my yard and house daily. Got to have it. It’s just something He does, Praise you Jesus, you don’t want anything else.all the other stuff is counterfeit. Hallelujah, to the KING. As you always said Pastor Frank, one TASTE is all it takes. Have a blessed day, with love. There is only ONE TRUE LOVE, JESUS….

  4. Jesus, Lover of my Soul, You are All and All to me: Doctor, Lawyer, Judge, Mother, Sister, Friend, Elder Brother, You are Everything to me: King of Kings, Lord of Lords!!! We can read in Psalm2: “Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.” We can also read in Psalm34: “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.” Jesus, Lover of my Soul, to Love Him is to fear and trust Him.

  5. Oops, and another interruption. Yes, to Love Him is to fear and trust Him. “And Oh, the Joy that Floods my Soul!!!”

  6. Praise God Pastor Frank; after reading your blog I recognized the song from the praise and worship service. I downloaded it and I’m stuck on it. It make me want more of God, more of he presence, more of everything he has to offer. The song truly motivates me hunger and I don’t think that in my circle of life I would have found this anywhere but Victory Fellowship. That’s two in a row, the first was “Oh How He Loves Us” HALLELUJAH.
