THAT FIRST SUNDAY

THAT FIRST SUNDAY

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:4

I had just been touched by revival for the first time that week and now it was time for Sunday morning church. I had no idea of what awaited me that Sunday, there was no way for me to prepare myself for the season we had just entered into. What I thought was a good service (maybe a little embarrassing) that we attended in Rockwall, Texas was more than just an ordinary service. Something had gotten on me and was about to break out at our church in New Orleans. As soon as I stepped behind the pulpit I knew that that Sunday was anything but normal. The same strange presence I had experienced in Texas was now in our church, there was no denying, no escaping, God was in the house. For some it was the greatest day of their lives, for others, not so much. The more I shared that morning, the stronger the presence became. By the time the service was over, our church was littered with bodies of people who had been overcome by the Glory of God. This is nothing new, it has been going on since the days of the upper room. Here is something Spurgeon said about the coming of the Holy Spirit.

“Rich were the blessings of this day if all of us were filled with the Holy Ghost. The consequences of this sacred filling of the soul it would be impossible to overestimate. Life, comfort, light, purity, power, peace; and many other precious blessings are inseparable from the Spirit’s benign presence. As sacred oil, he anoints the head of the believer, sets him apart to the priesthood of saints, and gives him grace to execute his office aright. As the only truly purifying water he cleanses us from the power of sin and sanctifies us unto holiness, working in us to will and to do of the Lord’s good pleasure. As the light, he manifested to us at first our lost estate, and now he reveals the Lord Jesus to us and in us, and guides us in the way of righteousness. Enlightened by his pure celestial ray, we are no more darkness but light in the Lord. As fire, he both purges us from dross, and sets our consecrated nature on a blaze. He is the sacrificial flame by which we are enabled to offer our whole souls as a living sacrifice unto God.”

Have you tasted the power of the world to come? If you have, then you know exactly what I am talking about. That first Sunday God was breaking in on us. This was not about just having a “good service” with a “good touch of God” on it. This was about life change. For those that tasted the goodness of God on that day there was no turning back. Impossible! Our lives would be forever defined by what had happened that morning. What exactly had happened? The Comforter had come. The Holy Spirit had come to dwell among us. We finally had seen what church was all about.

  1. I was as lost as a golf ball in high weeds in 94. Prior to this I only experienced God one on one.Yet my day was April 3, 2005, the first time I entered a church and God’s presence was as tangible as the smell of flowers, a summers breeze or the refreshing feel of a swim during the heat of summer and the people inside were worshipping Him. What else could I do but rush in and worship the God I met only three months prior. WOW!!! I would never be the same, I experienced corporate worship!!!

    1. should read:
