Romans 8:26 (NASB) says, “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to prate as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
When you pray in tongues often times you are praying for yourself. In fact, praying for yourself is something extremely important that you should do every day. Not only do you need to worship God, pray for others, and bring your requests before the Lord, but you need to pray over
yourself because you will face struggles, temptations, and challenges in this life. There are many things you don’t know how to “pray for as you ought,” as the Bible says. Unknown situations that you will face tomorrow or an attack from the devil which you can’t see are some of the areas only the Holy Spirit knows about. When you pray over yourself, the Holy Spirit prays for and with you over these areas. Pray in your understanding for the things you know about and pray in the Spirit for the things you don’t know about. Paul said, “I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also…” (1 Cor. 14:15 NASB). When I pray for myself, I will begin by praying in tongues for an extended time. Many times I will begin to get impressions about things going on in my life. I will then begin to pray with my natural language. In this way the Holy Spirit will lead me supernaturally in intercession over myself.
It’s funny how humans want to stay in control of their lives. The truth is there are many things way beyond our control. Praying over our own life is more than knowing the correct information or formula of prayer. It is also way more than just commitment to pray. We are in a dangerous, unpredictable environment. Let’s face it, we just don’t know how to pray as we ought. We need the intervention of the Spirit especially in our prayers, He alone can empower us and enlighten us to pray effectively.
Another challenge that we face when praying for ourselves is we don’t have any clue what the future holds. Our God is not limited by time, He created time and lives outside of time and space. To Him, tomorrow is no different than yesterday. He directs our prayers, that in turn guides us through the mine fields of life. Make it a practice to pray over yourself in your heavenly language, it will make life a whole lot less complicated.
