Mark 6:42 – They all ate and were satisfied,

What a picture is painted in the various gospel accounts of this incredible miracle. Thousands of people positioning themselves to hear Jesus teach, or maybe touch the fringe of His garment. Like people today, many were hurting and in need of a miracle. They were pushing and shoving, apparently desperate for a miracle that they hoped would change their life. The amazing thing about this particular meeting, it went on for days. Hungry, exhausted, and desperate; that pretty much sums up where this crowd was at. When the disciples had had just quite enough and wanted to disperse the crowd, Jesus shocked everyone, “You give them something to eat”, He told His disciples. You know the rest of the story, a little boy gave up his lunch and everyone ate from the miraculous provision that ensued. Now here is the best part, they all ate and were satisfied. What a picture, this world could never ever satisfy but this miracle pointed to a meal that can; bread from heaven is what our soul is hungry for. Check C.S. Lewis’s explanation of satisfaction.

“The Christian says, ‘Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage.”

So maybe, just maybe, this miracle was pointing to something else other than a good meal. We all love a good meal but after several hours we just get hungry again. Maybe this miracle was intended to point us to another kind of food that finally satisfies our hungry souls. Maybe that’s what this miracle was about all along, it was just a sign, pointing to the only reality that really matters.
