Heb.6:7-9 – When the ground soaks up the falling rain and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has God’s blessing. But if a field bears thorns and thistles, it is useless. The farmer will soon condemn that field and burn it. Dear friends, even though we are talking this way, we really don’t believe it applies to you. We are confident that you are meant for better things, things that come with salvation.
This passage follows immediately after Paul’s description of an apparent Christian that falls away from the faith or apostatizes. The verses today really explain the consequences of what we drink or the spiritual atmosphere we choose to live in. Drinking in the water of the Spirit and feasting on the bread from heaven is essential if we want to live in the blessings of God. Of course the opposite is also true. If our diet is the same as the world we will begin to display the fruit of everyone else in this antichrist culture we live in. We have to not only guard our hearts from the filth of this world we must constantly nourish ourselves in the atmosphere of heaven. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this interesting passage.
“Here is a description of the good ground: It drinks in the rain that cometh often upon it. Believers do not only taste of the word of God, but they drink it in; and this good ground brings forth fruit answerable to the cost laid out, for the honor of Christ and the comfort of his faithful ministers, who are, under Christ, dressers of the ground. And this fruit-field or garden receives the blessing. God declares fruitful Christians blessed, and all wise and good men account them blessed: they are blessed with increase of grace, and with further establishment and glory at last.”
The determination of whether we will have a blessed life or a life filled with the curse of this generation is quite predictable. Hang around worldly people, fill your mind with secular information and remedies, pursue only worldly entertainment and you will whither up like a plant in a drought. Of course the alternative is pretty obvious. Drink the living water, great droughts of it. Delight yourself in the fatness of the word of God. Find your place and get planted in the local church. Apply these simple ingredients in your life and you will flourish like a tree planted by the river.
