Jn.3:19 – And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
It seems to me that humans tend to get stuck in their beliefs and their actions and to get someone to change is quite an undertaking. According to today’s verse most folks just can’t seem to shake their personal bad behavior; and the result ? They get trapped in their own sins. Sin seems to breed a sense of security and impending doom all at the same time. Sinners know that the life they have chosen is headed toward a giant train wreck but as for the meantime, the show must go on. They love the dark world they have chosen, they find some kind of deranged comfort there. At the same time, the Lord is still reaching out to you in the time of your darkness. Step out of the shadows, respond to the light of God’s love for you. You can find yourself stepping out of condemnation into the very favor of God. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this conflict.
“That the gospel is light, and, when the gospel came, light came into the world, Light is self-evidencing, so is the gospel; it proves its own divine origin. Light is discovering, and truly the light is sweet, and rejoices the heart. It is a light shining in a dark place, and a dark place indeed the world would be without it. It is come into all the world, and not confined to one corner of it, as the Old-Testament light was. It is the unspeakable folly of the most of men that they loved darkness rather than light, rather than this light. The Jews loved the dark shadows of their law, and the instructions of their blind guides, rather than the doctrine of Christ. The Gentiles loved their superstitious services of an unknown God, whom they ignorantly worshipped, rather than the reasonable service which the gospel enjoins. Sinners that were wedded to their lusts loved their ignorance and mistakes, which supported them in their sins, rather than the truths of Christ, which would have parted them from their sins……Wretched man is in love with his sickness, in love with his slavery, and will not be made free, will not be made whole.”
Jesus had just shared with Nicodemus in the same conversation the basis of the light,
Jn.3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. Step out of the darkness and step into the light of God’s love.
