Ex.13:21 – And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.
He is the Light of the World. We see this pictured in this historic event seen in today’s passage. The cloud and the fire began to lead the children of God on their exodus from Egypt. There was trouble in the form of the Egyptian army behind them, and there was the Red Sea and the dangers of the wilderness before them. The fire and the cloud would lead the way as they began their perilous journey. Jesus was in this cloud, directing His people. Today He comes to us and lights our lives and our paths by His word and the presence of the Holy Spirit upon our lives. He is the Light of the World. He floods us with revelation light and brings guidance to our paths. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this incredible blessing.
“Those whom God brings into a wilderness he will not leave nor lose there, but will take care to lead them through it; we may well think it was a very great satisfaction to Moses and the pious Israelites to be sure that they were under divine guidance. Those needed not to fear missing their way who were thus led, nor being lost who were thus directed; those needed not to fear being benighted who were thus illuminated, nor being robbed who were thus protected. Those who make the glory of God their end, and the word of God their rule, the Spirit of God the guide of their affections, and the providence of God the guide of their affairs, may be confident that the Lord goes before them, as truly as he went before Israel in the wilderness, though not so sensibly; we must live by faith.”
The same Lord Who led the Israelites through the wilderness is leading us today. He leads us corporately as His church and He leads us individually as His sons and daughters. We live in a dark age in this world. Culture has not only rejected the Lord but is becoming more and more hostile to the message of the Word of God. Our response is to follow the cloud. He will lead us clearly if we look to Him and stay dependent on Him. “Let God arise and His enemies be scattered”.
