Jn.1:4 – In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
Hebrews 1:2,3 – But to us living in these last days, God now speaks to us openly in the language of a Son, the appointed Heir of everything, for through him God created the panorama of all things and all time. The Son is the dazzling radiance of God’s splendor, the exact expression of God’s true nature—his mirror image! He holds the universe together and expands it by the mighty power of his spoken word.
I don’t think I have ever connected these two passages together until today. The life of God can be described as the light of God. In John’s gospel, John is describing the Word Who became flesh with the terminology of light and life. In John and in Hebrews the Lord declares that everything came into existence by the Word of God. Shocking! If you pay close attention both passages also point to something else. Not only is everything created by God’s Word, the very life of God also sustains or holds together everything in His creation. His light and life are the very source of creation as well as the supernatural event happening all around us, He is sustaining all things to fulfill His plan. Here is how John Calvin describes John’s teaching.
“Hitherto he has taught us that by the Speech of God all things were created. He now attributes to him, in the same manner, the preservation of those things which had been created, as if he had said that in the creation of the world there was not merely displayed a sudden exercise of his power, which soon passed away, but that it is manifested in the steady and regular order of nature, as he is said to uphold all things “by the word or will of his power.”
Calvin also saw the power of this verse, it is Christ as life and light Who orchestrates all things. Now let’s make this personal. In 1973 light and life burst into my life. His revelation (light) changed the course of my life. His life has satisfied and sustained me. He has kept me together all of these years so that He can be glorified. So if you seem to be fumbling and stumbling through life look to Jesus. He is the Light of the World. His light and life will put you together and keep you together.
