Gal. 5:22,23 – But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit.
I love this verse in the Passion Translation. It really helps to bring out the practical aspects of what Paul was getting at in this verse. The traits Pauls describes are not natural characteristics of an improved version of you. This is a description of the life of God being lived inside of one who is crucified with Christ but alive in God. Let’s ponder these qualities in the life of one of His sons and daughters.
Love in all its varied expressions – Love is the very description of this anointing within us. Love becomes the dominant quality in our lives.
Joy that overflows – This is the supernatural joy of the Holy Spirit. It flows in us and through us despite our circumstances. The joy of the Lord is our strength.
Peace that subdues – This is the peace of God that lives in us in these circumstances and actually overcomes the unrest in our souls.
Patience that endures – The very endurance of Christ. Just like Jesus, because of the joy set before us supernatural endurance lives in us.
Kindness in action – Kindness is a great description of the life and ministry of Jesus. He lives in us and works through us. Kindness is a great description of the true ministry of His people.
A life full of virtue – The life of purity seen in Christ is rare in the world today. Purity of motive and purity of life is the evidence of Christ in us.
Faith that prevails – Faith is not just trying real hard to believe. Faith is the effect of God’s touch on our soul. By faith we perceive the greatness of God and we prevail in the challenges of life.
Gentleness of heart – Wow! Boy, do we ever need gentleness in this angry world. Gentleness is no cowering down to the threats and lies of this generation; its walking in kindness and gentleness in the midst of it. This is the life of Jesus.
Strength of spirit – Living our convictions in a compromising world is not for the weak. Christ is in us and His strength is able to withstand the pressures to cower to the spirit of the world.
This is our new life. How can I live this way? Drink in His life; saturate in His word and His Spirit and His fruit will increase in you.
