THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORM

Mk.5:19,20 – And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

Before we talk about this poor demonized man who had been set free, let’s go back a few hours. Jesus and His disciples were on the opposite side of the lake and Jesus made the declaration, “Let’s go to the other side”. There would not only be a lake between them and the demonized man in the cemetery in Gadara, there was also a horrible storm to pass through. All the disciples could see that evening was that their lives were being threatened by a storm. They had no idea what was on the other side of this storm. This miserable, suicidal man would not only be delivered, his whole region would be stirred by his story. And that’s not all, Decapolis was a region of Jews, mixed race people, and gentiles. There was not really a Jewish culture, after all they were pig farmers of all things. This would be the beginning of world wide harvest, there is always something on the other side of a storm. Here is how Barclay describes it.

“He was to be a witness for Christianity. He was to be a living, walking, vivid, unanswerable demonstration of what Christ can do for a man. Our glory must always be not in what we can do for Christ but in what Christ can do for us. The unanswerable proof of Christianity is a re-created man. He was to be the first seed of what in time was to become a mighty harvest. The first contact with Greek civilization was made in the Decapolis. Everything must start somewhere; and the glory of all the Christianity which one day flowered in the Greek mind and genius began with a man who had been possessed by demons and whom Christ healed. Christ must always begin with someone. In our own circle and society why should he not begin with us?”

All of us find ourselves caught in storms from time to time. We have all been in the 2020 storm for over half a year. I wonder if something special is on the other side. If I know Jesus I think something bigger than we know is about to break out just on the other side of this storm.
