Heb.1:3 – The Son is the dazzling radiance of God’s splendor, the exact expression of God’s true nature—his mirror image! He holds the universe together and expands it by the mighty power of his spoken word. He accomplished for us the complete cleansing of sins, and then took his seat on the highest throne at the right hand of the majestic One.
Christ is the outshining or radiance of the Heavenly Father. The light from the sun is a picture of this radiant light. Sunlight is more than just a visual image, it actually carries and transmits the very energy and power of the sun. Today, our scientists are trying to tap the energy that beams down on us everyday. There is basically an unlimited source of power being emitted from the sun all over the planet.
Just as we have had little success in the harnessing and use of solar energy it is still very real. Could it be possible that the radiance of God is beaming on us everyday without our taking notice or even benefitting from His creative light? Here is how the Orthodox Study Bible describes this.
“The brightness of His glory expresses the Son’s nature, His origin from and identity of nature with the Father. He is the Father’s brightness because He is begotten from the Father beyond time and without change. Thus, the Nicene Creed speaks of “Light of Light.” As the sun does not exist without radiating light, so the Father does not exist without His Son.
Thus, the Son reflects His Father’s glory in this world. The unapproachable light of divinity, the divine energy, is approachable only in the incarnate Christ. God’s brightness, though it had been experienced at the burning bush, known by Israel, and spoken of by the prophets, is especially revealed in Christ’s birth, the Transfiguration and the Resurrection.”
Looking at Jesus Christ is in essence looking at the Father. Jesus said, “If you have seen Me you have seen the Father”. Looking at Christ we see His goodness, His kindness, His healing power, His wisdom, and His incredible plan of redemption. He is the light of the world and it is in this radiance that we discover life itself. You have to admit that today darkness, spiritual darkness, is dominating society. The good news is that in this type of atmosphere the light of Christ shines brightest. Turn your heart toward Jesus, allow His radiance to shine deep into your being. Those who allow the radiance of God to effect their lives will shine as beacons in this world.
