1 Peter 2:9 – KJV – But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:
Some Bible passages seem to be seared in our minds from the King James Bible; this is one of those phrases. Peter says in this verse that we are God’s peculiar people. The meaning of the word ‘peculiar’ has changes over the years. In this usage it does not mean unusual or weird but could be said to mean special. We are each unique and special in His sight. This phrase is closely connected to the word ‘chosen’. We are uniquely loved and chosen by God for His purposes. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this verse.
“It is the honor of the servants of Christ that they are God’s peculiar people. They are the people of his acquisition, choice, care, and delight. These four dignities of all genuine Christians are not natural to them; for their first state is a state of horrid darkness, but they are effectually called out of darkness into a state of marvelous light, joy, pleasure, and prosperity, with this intent and view, that they should show forth, by words and actions, the virtues and praises of him who hath called them.”
We are called out of a dark place in life into the light of God’s glory. We are uniquely and peculiarly His. Here is how Wuest describes this verse.
“The word “peculiar” here is used in a way not often seen today. The Greek word means literally “to make around,” that is, to make something and then to surround it with a circle, thus indicating ownership. The same verb is used in the Septuagint translation of Isaiah 43:21 which reads, “This people have I formed for myself.”…The Greek word speaks of the unique, private, personal ownership of the saints by God. Each saint is God’s unique possession just as if that saint were the only human being in existence.”
This is an incredible declaration by Peter, we are God’s property. We are chosen by God to be His personal treasure. This is a place of safety and a bless of incredible blessing. I am God’s and I am on His royal mission. I am one of His peculiar people
