1 Peter 2:9,10 – But you are A CHOSEN PEOPLE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR GOD’S OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.
Over the last several years it has become quite popular to check your ancestry by using DNA samples. Your heritage is what it is, there is nothing you can do to change it. I recently checked mine and found I was 93% Irish-British the rest Western European; no surprise there. Apparently my relatives came over early; sometime in the 1700’s and lived mostly in Carolinas and Georgia. That is my biological heritage but obviously that is not what Peter is talking about in today’s verse. Peter is describing my spiritual heritage, I am part of a different generation. I have been born again into the family of God. I am part of the Lord’s chosen generation. Peter is quoting Hosea’s prophesy about a spiritual generation, a spiritual nation of people in the last days. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this.
“And by a generation is meant those that are of the same race and descent. Thus it must be understood in the text. The righteous are often spoken of in Scripture as being a different generation….That the godly are a different race appears as, inasmuch as they are descended from God, they are a heavenly race; they are derived from above. The heathen were wont to feign that their heroes and great men were descended from the gods, but God’s people are descended from the true and living God without a fiction. “A seed shall serve him; and it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.” That is, a seed or a posterity shall serve him, and it shall be accounted to the Lord for his posterity or offspring.”
This is the beauty of the gospel, we were not a people yet we have become the people of God. Whether your DNA is African, Asian, European, or a combination; that is no longer our identity. I have been born again into a chosen generation. I believe this will become a great sign to the world in the coming days, a spiritual generation walking together in Christ.
