1 Peter 1:3 – Celebrate with praises the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has shown us his extravagant mercy. For his fountain of mercy has given us a new life—we are reborn to experience a living, energetic hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
Peter connects the dots for us in this passage, he shows us clearly that the new birth comes from the power of the resurrection. He surely had in mind that first Easter Sunday evening when Jesus suddenly appeared in the upper room with them. He breathed on them and said “Receive the Holy Spirit”. This was the first time the disciples began to breath in the air from the new world, you could say they were breathing in resurrection life. This was their moment to experience the new birth; their lives were forever changed. Here is how Brian Simmons describes this passage.
“This is the only place in the New Testament where the Greek verb anagennaō is found. This shows that God himself is the one who gives us new birth as newborn believers filled with the life of Christ. God is truly our Father, who gives us new life through his living mercy. Peter states that the first result of our new birth is that we are brought into a living hope in the power of God, based on the resurrection of Christ. The God of resurrection gives us a powerful hope to excel in life. The second result that comes from our new birth is an eternal inheritance, which is available now by faith, and will also be reserved in heaven for us when we pass from death to life. Paul describes it as “every spiritual blessing” that has already been given to us by God.”
This resurrection life effects us now as well as in the coming kingdom. For now, we share the life of Christ. This empowers us to live a supernatural life now. The same power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us and helps us to live a victorious life. It also prepares us for the coming kingdom. We are literally breathing the atmosphere of another world. Heaven will be quite different from this present life. This new resurrection Spirit is preparing us for this new world. We have been born again and this Spirit within us lives with a joyful anticipation of the coming kingdom.
