Heb.1:3 – And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.

This has always been one of the most amazing descriptions of Jesus in the whole Bible to me. He is the radiance of the Father’s glory. Like Jesus said, “If you have seen Me you have seen the Father”. He is the exact representation of His nature. The Lord is good, we see that goodness displayed in Christ. It’s the next phrase that absolutely stops me in my tracks; “He upholds all things by the word of His power”. That is absolutely beyond human understanding. This man Jesus is upholding everything that is, by His word. That includes wind, waves, and storms on earth; it also includes everything in this vast universe. Every black hole, every galaxy, every distant solar system; it is all sustained by His word. Every challenge and opportunity you face; that is also included. His sovereign word upholds everything. Here is how Albert Barnes describes this passage.

“He upholds or sustains all things—i. e. the universe. It is not merely the earth; not only its rocks, mountains, seas, animals, and men, but it is the universe—all distant worlds. How can he do this who is not God? He does it by his word—his command. What a conception! That a simple command should do all this: So the world was made when God “spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. So the Lord Jesus commanded the waves and the winds, and they were still, so he spoke to diseases, and they departed—and to the dead, and they arose. I know not how men can explain away this ascription of infinite power to the Redeemer. There can be no higher idea of omnipotence than to say, that he upholds all things by his word; and assuredly he who can hold up this wast universe, so that it does not sink into anarchy or into nothing, must be God.”

The book of Hebrews opens up describing Jesus of Nazareth as Almighty God in no uncertain terms. In His humanity, He is touched with our struggles and weaknesses. In His deity; He rules, upholds, and overcomes all things. Is Christ in your life? If so worship Him, lean on Him, trust Him. He is upholding every part of your life.
