Ps.96:6 – Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
The Lord is indescribable in His greatness. Words can never describe this one who is beyond description. David gives it his best shot in today’s verse. He describes the Lord with words like splendor, majesty, strength, and beauty. These are only words to those who have never tasted His greatness for themselves. He is all powerful displaying an unrivaled strength; at the same time His beauty takes your breath away. In the human world strength is reserved to describe men and beauty to describe women; He alone displays unmatched power and beauty at the same time. Power flows out from Him like a massive river, beauty radiates from Him like the dawning of a brand new day. Here is how Spurgeon describes this passage.
“Men can but mimic these things; their pompous pageants are but the pretense of greatness. Honor and majesty are with him and with him alone. In the presence of Jehovah real glory and sovereignty abide, as constant attendants. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. In him are combined all that is mighty and lovely, powerful and resplendent. We have seen rugged strength devoid of beauty, we have also seen elegance without strength; the union of the two is greatly to be admired. Do we desire to see the “sublime and beautiful” at one glance? Then we must look to the eternal throne. In the Chronicles we read strength and gladness; and the two renderings do not disagree in sense, for in the highest degree in this instance it is true that “a thing of beauty is a joy for ever.” Not in outward show or parade of costly robes does the glory of God consist; such things are tricks of state with which the ignorant are dazzled; holiness, justice, wisdom, grace, these are the splendors of Jehovah’s courts, these the jewels and the gold, the regalia, and the pomp of the courts of heaven.”
His strength and power beg for our worship. That is why David said ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His Name. Is that even possible? Not in a thousand lifetimes. His glory is higher than the heavens and deeper than the oceans. The angels have been proclaiming His glory from the dawning of time. I think its time for us to join in the celebration.
