Matt.5:13 – You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.

You are they salt of the earth. What an unusual thing for the Lord to say to His followers. Why salt of all things?! At the time of Christ, salt was even more important than it is now. Here is how Matthew Henry describes salt of the earth.

“The doctrine of the gospel is as salt; it is penetrating, quick, and powerful; it reaches the heart. It is cleansing, it is relishing, and preserves from putrefaction. We read of the savour of the knowledge of Christ; for all other learning is insipid without that. An everlasting covenant is called a covenant of salt; and the gospel is an everlasting gospel. Salt was required in all the sacrifices, in Ezekiel’s mystical temple. Now Christ’s disciples having themselves learned the doctrine of the gospel, and being employed to teach it to others, were as salt. Note, Christians, and especially ministers, are the salt of the earth.”

Henry mentioned three characteristics of salt that we should consider. First, it is a cleansing agent. Anyone from Southeast Louisiana knows that you have to purge crawfish with salt before you boil them. Just like salt, the gospel is God’s cleansing agent. The Word of God cleanses us and makes us more like Christ. He said salt is relishing or it makes things taste good. Again, you ever taste grits if the water wasn’t prepared with salt before you cook them? They never taste right without the preparation of salt. Henry also says that salt preserves or keeps things from getting rotten. We are the salt of the earth; without God’s people this society would putrefy rapidly.
The apostle Paul said our words were to be seasoned with salt. Col.4:6 – “Your speech must always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person”. As we proclaim the word of God it has those three characteristics on our world. It brings cleansing to all who listen to our message. It brings flavor or joy into the heart of the recipients. Finally, our words are holding the spirit of antichrist in check. Without the salt of the earth, this world would destroy itself quickly.

  1. Quite the ending statement, one which I totally agree with. What do you think the percentage of the earth’s population carry enough of this “salt” to keep destruction at bay? 10%? If that’s correct, 1>9 is eye opening in relation to the power and authority. Makes me glad to know He is praying without ceasing.
