Mk.4:39-41- A feeling of awe came over the disciples as a result of Jesus’ mighty act. Something about him was revealed to them on this occasion that they had not experienced before. Their rhetorical question implied the answer, “He is the strong Son of God.”

Up to this point in the ministry of Jesus the disciples had not realized exactly who it was that was with them. It had been exciting to see lepers healed, blind eyes opened, and paralytics leaping for joy. Things change quickly when it’s your own skin on the line. This storm had finally gotten everyone’s full attention. If something didn’t happen quickly there was a real chance these fisherman would end up at the bottom of the lake. As soon as the disciples began to cry out the Lord went into action. He was actually speaking to the wind and waves. The surprising thing- the waves and the wind responded. They were beginning to realize who Jesus was, He was the creator and Lord of all things, yet He was a man. Here is how the Expositor’s Commentary describes this event:

“A feeling of awe came over the disciples as a result of Jesus’ mighty act. Something about him was revealed to them on this occasion that they had not experience before. Their rhetorical question implied the answer, “He is the strong Son of God.” It is not difficult to imagine what effect this story had on the members of the persecuted Roman church Mark wrote his gospel for. It assured them that the strong Son of God would go with them into the storm of opposition and trial.”

This story became a favorite of the early church. Here are some thoughts from the Passion Notes:

“It is not difficult to imagine what effect this story had on the members of the persecuted Roman church Mark wrote his gospel for. It assured them that the strong Son of God would go with them into the storm of opposition and trial.”

Maybe this storm Ida has made all of us stop and reevaluate exactly who Jesus is. If so, it has been worth it. He not only heals sick people and feeds the hungry, He also takes care of you and me. Don’t let this storm overwhelm you. Look to Jesus- He is still Lord over the wind and the waves.
