Jn.1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jn.1:14 – And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John’s gospel is quite different from all the others. There are no stories about mangers, shepherds, or wise men from the East. John didn’t discuss the virgin birth or angelic visitation, He went straight to the point. Jesus is Creator, the Word of the Father, the Light of the World and He became a man. ‘He tabernacled amongst us’, John said. He is the revelation of the Father who has existed with the Father from the beginning. John made it very clear that Jesus was God who came to us in the flesh.
I find it interesting how much the followers of Jesus changed, I think that may have been a major part of their great success. Everyone new these disciples were commoners, they were fishermen for Pete’s sake. Peter was changed into a powerful preacher and John recorded the things that he heard and saw that have changed the world for generations. The first eighteen verses of his gospel are unparalleled, they unveil the glory of God in Christ. John was a fisherman who wrote like a man from another world. Here is a poem I recently wrote inspired by this passage from the gospel of John.
THE WORD OF A FISHERMAN
IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD
THE WORD THAT WAS BEFORE TIME BEGAN
PULSING DANCING CREATING SINGING
CALLING AND DRAWING FALLEN MAN
IN THE WORD IS LIGHT AND LIFE
FROM ITS RHYTHM ALL THINGS SURVIVE
CREATION PULSING DANCING SINGING
LIGHT AND LIFE THAT MAKE US ALIVE
THE WORD CAME AND DWELT AMONG US
TO LIVE ON EARTH AS A COMMON MAN
PULSING DANCING CALLING SINGING
UNVEILING THE FATHER’S ETERNAL PLAN
FROM THE BOSOM OF THE FATHER
COMES THE DANCE BEFORE TIME AND SPACE
PULSING DANCING SINGING DECLARING
GOD HAS JOINED THE HUMAN RACE
The Word has been changing lives since the earliest of times. How could it not effect us? The Word is the very power of God that created all things. His word breaks chains of addiction, heals our broken bodies, and restores our soul. Feast on Him this year; let His changes take hold deep within your heart. 2022 is upon us, He is making all things new in every one of us.
