Heb.1:1 – God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son,
Heb.1:1 – the Passion – Throughout our history God has spoken to our ancestors by his prophets in many different ways. The revelation he gave them was only a fragment at a time, building one truth upon another. But to us living in these last days, God now speaks to us openly in the language of a Son,
Human languages are vital in our day to day world. We think in ideas and pictures but we communicate with others through our words. Learning to talk is one of the first and most important skills we develop. Many times we talk about the first word or words an infant speaks. Often it can be quite unintelligible understood only by the closest family members. We sometimes call this kind of communication baby talk. In today’s verse we have an interesting phrase introduced to us. Paul says that in these last days God has spoken to us in His Son. What the literal reading of this phrase is this, “in these last days God has spoken to us in Son”. To me this is quite amazing, apparently the Lord has introduced a new dialect to communicate with His people. He has called this language “Son”. Just like we would say they were speaking in Spanish or Swahili, today the Lord is speaking in “Son”. Here is how Brian Simmons describes this phrase.
“Or “he has spoken through a Son.” We speak in English; God speaks in “Son,” for Jesus is the language of God. The Sonship of Jesus is the language he now uses to speak to us.”
I love the sound of that, Jesus is the language of God. Of course He is. He is the Word of the Father and He is the Word that became a man. His Name is like oil poured out, His Name is a prayer on our lips, and His Name has become our song. When you became a new born child of God your first word in this new language was not mama but it was Jesus. He is the first word in the language called Son. He washes the old language of our old life out of us and He fills us with this new language, the language that is known as “Son”.
