Ezekiel.37:9 – Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘The Lord GOD says this: Come from the four winds, breath, and breathe on these slain, so that they come to life.’”

This is the very heart of the message that Jesus was preaching to Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a teacher of the law. He knew every detail of the scripture and had a system of how to apply it to daily life in Israel. The problem was this, he had no idea about the fallen nature and the effect the fall of man had on all of us. Mankind was dead in their sins. Nicodemus was dead in his sin. There was no code of behavior or sacrifice that could be offered to fix this. Man was dead. The only solution could be found in the wind. Jesus called it being born again.
Again, Nicodemus missed the point, “how can a man enter his mother’s womb and be born again?” That’s when Jesus began to talk about the wind. He said we must be born of this Spirit-wind. Here is how F. E. Marsh describes this.

“Men and brethren, what shall we do?” But the prevailing energy of the Holy Spirit? It is He that causes the soul to awake to a sense of its danger, sinfulness, corruption, and helplessness. It is He that begets a new nature. It is He that presents to us, like Eliezer of old, who took of
the precious things of Isaac’s and showed them to Rebekah; so the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see the preciousness–not only of the blessings He gives–of Christ Himself. It is the Spirit that links us to our risen Lord, and makes us one in and with Him.”

Many people think they are better than most and with a little teaching and effort they will be just fine. Jesus taught that it goes deeper than that. Even those who have managed to be “civilized” and have basic good behavior are rotten to the core. We must be born again or we cannot even see or understand the kingdom of God. The sinfulness of human nature has blinded our eyes. That’s what Ezekiel’s vision had in mind. Jesus’ whole ministry was calling for the wind to come and raise us from the dead. The wind is still blowing across the land. Breath in today and take in His life.
