Mal. 4:5,6 – Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD. He will turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and strike the land with complete destruction.

Shockingly, this is the very last verse of the Old Testament. We see the fulfillment of this word beginning at the first pages of the New Testament with John the Baptist preaching in the spirit and power of Elijah. His message of repentance brought the hearts of the fathers back to the children and the hearts of the children back to their fathers. This is the true mark of a move of the Spirit of God- repentance which leads to restoration of relationships. The breakdown of the family is a sure sign of the spirit of this age. Repentance and revival is God’s prophetic sign of a brand new day dawning in our land. Here is how Adam Clarke describes this prophesy.

“But we have already seen that John the Baptist, the forerunner of our Lord, was the person designed; for he came in the spirit and power of Elijah, and has fulfilled this prophetic promise. John is come, and the Lord Jesus has come also; he has shed his blood for the salvation of a lost world; he has ascended on high; he has sent forth his Holy Spirit; he has commissioned his ministers to proclaim to all mankind redemption in his blood; and he is ever present with them, and is filling the earth with righteousness and true holiness. Hallelujah! The kingdoms of this world are about to become the kingdoms of God and our Lord Jesus! And now, having just arrived at the end of my race in this work, and seeing the wonderful extension of the work of God in the earth, my heart prays:— O Jesus, ride on, till all are subdued, Thy mercy make known, and sprinkle thy blood; Display thy salvation, and teach the new song…”

It is time for this word to be fulfilled again. The spirit of Elijah and John the Baptist will settle in on His church. Repentance that leads to restoration and renewal is upon us. Our world stands in need of a major outpouring. Jesus said that the last days would be like the days of Noah with man’s heart consumed by wickedness. Only His mercy can change all of this. This is the time for the hearts of the fathers to return to their children and the hearts of the children to return to their fathers.
