Ps.110:1 – The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
This Psalm is probably the most quoted of all Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah, and interestingly it is about our Lord’s heavenly ministry. Jesus is currently seated at the right hand of the Father engaged in His heavenly ministry; I absolutely love this. This truth was included in all apostolic preaching. It was connected to Lordship, confession and forgiveness of sins, sovereignty, intercession for us, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Here is a quote from Matthew Henry about this extremely important prophetic word.
“That he is to be advanced to the highest honor and entrusted with absolute sovereign power both in heaven and on earth: Sit thou at my right hand. Sitting is a resting position; after his services and sufferings, he rested from all his labors. It is a ruling position; he sits to give law and justice. It is a lasting position; he sits as a king forever. Sitting at the right hand of God shows both his honor and his authority, the honor put on him and the trust placed in him by the Father. All the favors that come from God to human beings, and all the service that comes from human beings to God, pass through his hand.’
Notice the significance of being seated that Henry brings out. First, it is the place of rest. Christ has finished the work of redemption at the cross and resurrection; He is waiting as all enemies are being completely conquered. Being seated is also a ruling position. Paul said that Jesus was sitting on the throne “upholding all things by the word of His power”. That word always takes my breath away. All of earth’s activities, all of the activities in the universe (that appears to be infinite) are upheld by Him; all of the activities effecting my life are also being moved along and sustained by Him. This concept alone can never be fully grasped. It is also a lasting position- He will rule forever. There can never be an end to His kingdom. This position at the Father’s right hand speaks of the honor and glory on Christ. All of creation points to His glory, all of the angels and citizens of heaven worship Him; this is what will make heaven so heavenly; we will join in with this worship forever.
